Outstanding outcome of today’s ADM seminar on Subliminal Advertising

In preparation to the seminar ADM team has spread visual clues around Winchester campus: ladders, rainbows, posters with an elephant cartoon and the slogan “Come and play inside”. The clues were positioned so that they would be noticed but also not stand out from the normal campus environment. At the start of the seminar, we briefed four groups of ADM students and asked them to design a poster for a children Play Center. We gave no advice during the brainstorming process in order to not influence their creativity. Half and hour later, we asked students to present their ideas and posters. outstandingly three out of the four groups used elements from our clues! I have attached here the best outcome: it shows that 4 out of the 5 clues positioned around the campus were actually used in the poster. Notice: a ladder, clear reference to the slogan “Come and Play”, balloons and even an elephant!!!! This seminar has been great fun but also links to today’s theoretical debate on subliminal advertising and its effectiveness and my lecture on “Subliminal Advertising, Neuroscience and Sensory Advertising”. Thanks to ADM staff for collaborating to the success of this great experiment and the students for participating so enthusiastically. Watch also Julian Gee video on the seminar. Brilliant! Giulia

ONE FOR ONE CAMPAIGN-TOMS SHOES

This campaign stands above the typical brands ads because Toms tries to convince customers o do well and help others. Toms has a simple one for one mission: When you buy a pair of TOMS shoes, a pair is donated to a child who is need. And in 2010 Toms held an event called one day without shoes to support the one for one mission.

In fact this is a simple ads. It uses simple pictures to create an animation to shows the key point of one for one mission. Audiences will have a soft spot for child, so the narrator of the ads is a boy who named Ronnie. The ads shows one information: If u buy a pair of TOMS shoes as a present, Toms will give a pair to who they need as a present. The target audiences are 18+ caring adults.

John Lewis, a big department store in UK. This afternoon we watched the BBC’s programme, “Inside John Lewis”. The programme has three parts and we watched the first and the main part. It was about the 2009 Christmas ads of John Lewis.

The ads shows one concept: Remember how Christmas used to feel. In the ads, the children received different types of gifts. But the gifts seem to be not fit for the children. But at the end of the ads, the girl ,who used the camera, has became an adult. The ads want to tell customers and audiences one information: when you received a gift which is from John Lewis, you feel so excited just like you are a child. When you were a child, you felt happy and excited when you received a christmas present. In my opinion, this is the main concept that the ads shows.

The background song is Gun’n Rose Sweet Child O Mine. But it is a cover version. This version softer than the original one. And match the ads.

Hi fellows. My name is Jessica. I’m 20 plus years old now. I’m from Guangdong Province, China.

I studied in Beijing Normal University, Zhuhai Campus for my BA degree. My major was mass media. And in my senior, I focused on Advertising aspect, which I was really interesting in. It is the reason that why I come to University of Southampton, Study in Advertising and Design Management for my master degree. After I graduated from my BA degree, I used to work in an advertising company that was the biggest one in my hometown for my internship. And I used to be a Journalist. Different jobs gave me different experiences. I think these are very important for my whole life. That is also the reason why I go aboard for my further education. I want to have different experiences.

I’m a big fan of movies music and photography. I usually watch movies or go outside and take photos during my free time. And I love to travel alone. But I also love to travel with my friends coz friends are so important to me. Also music is a part of my life too~

In my future, I want to be a good advertising producer and I want to help Chinese advertising industry develop. That is my biggest dream in my life.
